FAQ: Which of My Characters is Me

I’m always amazed at how different writers are from each other when it comes to the writing process. It’s really fascinating.

One question I’m asked often is which of my characters is me.

The answer: none of them.

Though I might share “lingo” with my characters (I do love the word ‘fuck’), I keep myself far, far away from my characters and let them be their own people. Sometimes the characters are so removed from me, I learn new perspectives of life that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

My husband, who knows me very, very well, has been asked by my fans which character is me. He always says, “None of them.” Then they ask which one is him, and the answer is the same.

I don’t see the point of attempting to insert people I know into my books. The only times I’ve done this, I’ve only taken aspects of my friend’s personality, but the characters are NOT the people they were very, very loosely inspired by. (Except for Ashley the Bookish Brunette. We cloned her for The Midnight Spell).

I know this probably disappoints some people, but honestly, I’m just the boring girl behind the curtain pulling levers.
